Why they all want an account
Try to send an invoice from a phone and you'll notice a pattern. Before you can bill anyone, you're asked for an email address. Then a password. Then, often, a card — for the free trial, which will renew.
None of that is required to draw a PDF. A phone from ten years ago could render an invoice offline. The account exists because the product isn't really the invoice; it's the subscription. An account gives a company a way to email you, a way to measure your usage, a way to hold your data where leaving is inconvenient, and a recurring line of revenue.
That trade can be worth it if you're using the full suite — expenses, payroll, bank feeds, online card payments. If you send four invoices a month, you're paying a platform fee for a document.
What that actually costs you
- Your client list becomes someone else's data. Names, addresses, what you charge them and how much they owe you — uploaded to a third party by default, usually before you've decided whether you like the app.
- You can't work without signal. Cloud-first apps stall in a basement, on a train, on a site with no coverage. The invoice is ready in your head and the app is showing a spinner.

"Local only" is the right default for privacy, but it makes the backup entirely your responsibility, and most people don't back up their phone as often as they think they do.
